What is a Bitter Gourd?

At first glance, the bitter gourd is not the most attractive-looking vegetable, with its bumpy rough surface.

There are two varietals of the bitter gourd – one is generally longer and oblong in shape, and is a paler, almost white colour.  This variety is popular in Taiwan, and is even served as a raw juice.  The smaller variety is shorter, rounder, and darker in colour, as pictured above.

Bitter gourds are generally grown in hot and humid climates.  As such, they are most commonly consumed in Asian countries and South America.

There are countless health benefits provided by bitter gourds.  It is a rich source of vitamin B and C, as well as zinc, magnesium and dietary fibre.  Some say drinking bitter gourd juice may alleviate hangover symptoms, and nourish the liver.

Therefore, though the bitter flavour is an acquired taste, it is worth a try!
