While investigators are racing to identify the elusive source of the recent E. coli outbreak in Europe, nations are taking precautionary measures against possible contamination. Fortunately, there haven’t been any reported cases in Asia, but if you are concerned about eating vegetables, there are a few precautions you can take to safeguard our national health.
1. Do your research. Find out where your food comes from and be particularly vigilant with imported vegetables from areas close to where the suspected source of the outbreak is.
2. Eat locally if possible. Eating locally and organically from sources that you can visit (i.e. nearby farms where you can meet the farmers themselves) is the safest option. If you must consume imported vegetables from unknown sources, wash them thoroughly and cook them first.
3. Clean. Make sure all the utensils, plates, chopping boards, kitchen surfaces, etc that come into contact with vegetables are cleaned in hot soapy water. Sanitize the kitchen regularly along with all cleaning material such as dish clothes and sponges.
